Pre-Therapy Blog

Currently reading:

  • It Came From the Closet: Queer Reflections on Horror, edited by Joe Vallese

Books finished this week: 1 🎉

  • Where this book came from: Kew & Willow ❤️

  • Why this book: This was a selection for a DEI book event at work. I ended up not finishing in time for the meeting (and having to miss the meeting for some last-minute editorial work, anyway), but I was already deeply invested and had to finish it.

  • Thoughts: I loved this book. It only took me so long to read because life kept getting in the way (and I was so angry every time something pulled me away from reading Americanah). The structure and story weren’t quite what I expected from the blurb, but not in a bad way. It was good to see two very different and very honest stories of immigration, as two people who were once so close end up walking disparate life paths. I cannot recommend Americanah enough.

Library updates:

I’m typing up this post on Saturday morning, the latest I’ve drafted one of these in a little while. I’m waiting for my therapist to send the Zoom link to start our session, but we’re now ten minutes past the scheduled appointment. I’m trying not to get upset by that. I’m also battling with my urge to write her a message and see what’s up. It’s been almost fifteen minutes now, which feels like a reasonable time to check in. But I don’t want to bother her. I’m sure she’s busy, or something came up. I don’t love being left without a plan, but I’ll just deal with it! Right!!

I guess this is something we’ll have to discuss when (/if) we finally get started for this week.

[Time jump——therapy has happened and I only cried a little!]

I haven’t done a lot of writing this week (or over the last few weeks), because work and life (and YouTube) seem to keep popping up to thwart me. So it’s a little strange to be back on my personal laptop. My work computer is a PC, and since I’ve been using that all week, trying to remember the keyboard shortcuts on a Mac feels like trying to speak a foreign language. I’ve mistyped so many of these words already.

Therapy was a little shorter this week because, honestly, I felt okay over the last seven days. I talked to a lot of friends (you know who you are and you know how great you are) and got through a lot of tasks at work. So this is going to be a shorter blog post, too. (At least you get a pretty picture of a book as compensation.)

The crown jewel of the week, though, was getting to see one of my favorite movies on the big screen. I went to a screening of The Faculty at the Nitehawk with my friend Maia (hi, Maia!) and had the time of my life. The queso we accidentally ordered two orders of was incredible. The boozy milkshakes could not be beat. The audience participation was stellar. I’ve sometimes thought about how much fun it would be to go back in time and see my favorite movies in a theater on their opening weekends, but I honestly don’t think that seeing The Faculty on Christmas Day 1998 could in any way be better than seeing it on a Wednesday evening in October with that rowdy, excited crowd.

The happiest of I’ve ever been.

Closing thoughts:

Go to the movies. That’s it.

Total books read from the Moratorium Library: 20 😎
