A bit behind, but working on catching up and breaking 50k sooner rather than later!

Library updates:

Anyone who knows me knows that holidays are a small affair for me. The family members who gather to celebrate the Big Ones are now just me, Moneypenny (my cat), and my parents. Thanksgiving this year was no different——excellent food, no real plans, some tension, the usual. I have therapy on Tuesday night; I’ll rehash it there.

I’ve gotten better about it in recent years, but I do spend at least a little time each year thinking what it would be like if things were different. If I had a partner and/or children right now; if more of my extended family was involved in holidays (and other aspects of my life); if I had siblings; if my family had a wider social circle and did more of a “friendsgiving.” I do know that I would like to one day own a home and invite everyone into it for a holiday, to fill that home with noise and food and chaos. But in the meantime, I’ll take this.

All of that said, in the spirit of the season (even if I’m a few days late), I’d like to present a list of thanksgiving, honoring some random ideas I had over the past week about things that bring me joy, and some messages I hope you’ll carry with you through this holiday season.

Thank you:

. . . to whoever or whatever taught me to use baby oil to take off makeup.

. . . to VH1, for the Thanksgiving Throwback marathon, which included a Dirty Dancing/Titanic/Top Gun triple feature on Thanksgiving itself.

. . . to past me, for leaving that mostly full box of tampons in the dresser of my childhood bedroom (and to my mom for remembering it was there, right when I needed it).

. . . to the people who decorate for Christmas on Thanksgiving.

. . . to Dunkin’s holiday drink menu.

. . . to the internet, for allowing me to purchase things within seconds of thinking of them.

. . . to Matt Gourley and Matt Mira, for getting the rights to their podcast James Bonding back so I can listen to it again for free.

. . . to Squarespace, and all the many, many podcasts that run ads for them.

. . . to my friends, for texting to check in and for inviting me to things and for asking questions and for being in my life in general (and for being wonderful enough that I regret not being in my apartment and able to see you all at the drop of a hat during the holidays).

. . . to my cat, the sweetest, most clever girl to ever walk this planet.

. . . to my mom and dad, who always make it clear how much they want to see me, not just on special occasions, but always.

. . . to you, the person reading this, whoever you are. I cannot express what it means to have you here. This blog is mostly an exercise in my own diligence and a way for me to practice building habits, so I sincerely appreciate having you along for the ride.

Closing thoughts:

Welcome to the holiday season! I hope it’s wonderful for you. And if it isn’t, I hope you find something, no matter how small, to bring you happiness. Let me know if you need anything.

Four more from McNally Jackson Seaport last Sunday evening, because how else are you supposed to spend a Sunday evening in late fall, if not at a bookstore/cafe with a wonderful friend? (Hi, Britt!)
