Mostly the Beach

Currently reading:

  • The Shards by Bret Easton Ellis

  • Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor

I only have one more grad school book to read, so I used the holiday as an excuse to make headway on The Shards. I’M SO CLOSE TO FINISHING THE SHARDS, YOU GUYS.

Books finished this week: 0 (so close!!)

Library updates:

I spent a lot of time at the beach this week, which felt correct. I also tried to convince my physical therapist (who I see for my plantar fasciitis, because I am old) to write me a prescription to go to the beach, after he said that walking on sand would probably help strengthen muscles in my foot. (He laughed; we bonded; I did not get that prescription.)

Maia (hi, Maia!) and I went to the beach on the Fourth of July and spent about an hour just getting drenched by a seemingly unending torrential downpour. We actually got shooed off the beach basically the minute we got down to the water, because there was thunder and lightning and some very ominous clouds, but we had a good time dancing and chatting at the bar. Just as I began to lose hope that the storm would pass, as Maia insisted it would, the rain did let up and everyone started heading back down to the sand. The sun didn’t really come out, but it felt like the right weather for celebrating America’s birthday (yeesh, amirite). And there were dolphins that, for a brief moment, I absolutely thought were sharks!

Anyway, I went to the beach after work on Friday and the weather was much nicer and the water was comfortably warm. Pure bliss is just sitting on the beach and reading for hours, taking a quick dip to cool off every now and then.

That’s all I really have for you fine folks this week. I’m sorry this hasn’t been much of a book blog this summer—I’m hoping to change that soon. Maybe I’ll do a round-up of grad school reads once I finish this last book. It feels a little silly to say, but I do miss reading and reviewing books. I’ve been doing a lot of reading, of course, and writing lots of responses to what I read, but I look forward to my triumphant return to less structured thinking about books.

I also saw Parade. For the fourth time.

Closing thoughts:

Go to the beach. Trust me.

Total books read from the Moratorium Library: 36

(Soon to be 37 . . . ?)
