Spookyfest 2022

Currently reading:

  • Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

This book is so good and I’m reading it every chance I get. The problem is that I haven’t had a lot of chances to read in the last few weeks.

Books finished this week: 0

Trying very hard not to be mad about it.

Please accept this gratuitous picture of my cat being cute as an apology. She’s being extra cuddly now that it’s getting colder.

Library updates:

This was the longest short week I’ve experienced in quite a while. After walking 20k+ steps on Saturday at New York Comic Con, I basically ruined my right foot (where are my self-diagnosed plantar fasciitis girlies??) and then spent my Monday off going to the doctor to get a tetanus shot, a flu shot, and a blood draw. Then I got home from the doctor, canceled my afternoon plans, and crashed. I knew work was going to be incredibly busy this week, so I was glad for the rest.

And then work got incredibly busy, but in new and exciting and unexpected ways!! It was so busy that I couldn’t get to my writing group on Wednesday——which really caused far more angst for me than I thought it would——and I spent most of my free time staring at YouTube when I needed to be doing freelance work or writing or doing laundry.

My therapy homework for this week was also to keep a list of anxious thoughts. HA.

So, not much reading and zero writing this week. Despite that, I picked up some fun comics from NYCC that I plan to frame and hang (once I find wall space) and I’m proud of everything I managed to get done at work this week.

What there has been the last few weeks is scary movies, because I fully subscribe to spooky season. For the last few years, I’ve attempted to expand my horror movie knowledge by watching movies I missed the first time around, digging deeper into popular franchises, and just clicking at random on whatever Shudder offers up. I also went a bit wild this year with Brooklyn Horror Fest purchases and got tickets to a few showings (starting with the opening-night movie, Nocebo, on Thursday night this week). I rewatched Halloween Kills and remembered what a load of horseshit it is, and then finally watched Scream (2022) and, goddamn, but it was fun.

Movies watched as of October 15 🎃 Orange hearts indicated favorites.

I’ve kept a list of what I’ve watched each October, these last few years, and this year is no different. It is officially Spookyfest 2022 and I hope you’re all planning to participate. If you know me or you’ve read any bit of this blog, you know I love a list. I like keeping track of what I want to watch and what I think I should watch and what I’ve already seen. Maybe I shouldn’t gamify my leisure time—as if that isn’t the whole goddamn point of this blog——but sometimes it’s the only way I make myself revel in leisure. Who doesn’t love a list?

I don’t like to call myself an expert on anything. Part of it is imposter syndrome, probably. The other part is just because it’s too much pressure. I don’t want to delve into discourse. I don’t want to know every little detail about every facet of a fandom. I just want to enjoy things. So I’m by no means a horror expert. But I am a fan, especially of slashers, and I’m fairly well-watched at this point. I like diving into this part of my personality every October. (I also like having an excuse to rewatch The Faculty for the 3894985984th time.)

I have felt very tired over the last few weeks. Sometimes coffee helps. Sometimes I worry I have depression, because I don’t want to do anything at all and because getting up in the morning is hard. So I’m trying to be better about resting——and about doing nothing——and having these movies to watch has helped.

This post is sorely lacking in books. More reading and reviewing to come, I promise. I’m working hard to pull everything back into balance, and though I don’t want to jinx it, I think it’s working.

Closing thoughts:

Paint your nails and watch a horror movie. It’s self-care.

Total books read from the Moratorium Library: 19

(Total books added to the Library: 33)

I mean, would you turn down a book called Suburban Dicks?

This should technically have been included last week, but I got home too late to add it. Also maybe I was ashamed. Purchased directly from Fabian Nicieza at New York Comic Con.

Including pictures of the comics I bought, too, to prove I’m a real nerd.

Also I went to brunch one block away from Book Club yesterday. I am bad at this.
