Rainy Sunday Evening

Currently reading:

  • Nerd: Adventures in Fandom From This Universe to the Multiverse by Maya Phillips

  • Severance by Ling Ma

Books finished this week: 1

★★★★☆

  • Where this book came from: ordered from Barnes & Noble online

  • Why this book: I saw it in a display at the Barnes & Noble at Union Square, let the thought simmer for awhile, and then ordered it. (It was part of this breakdown of will last summer.) The cover caught my eye.

  • Thoughts: Right at the top, trigger warnings for sexual assault. This book was a bit meandering and I sometimes felt like characterizations didn’t totally add up. But it was also strangely compelling? And I got honest-to-god emotional in the last twenty or so pages. If you like cults, this will probably interest you, too.

Library updates:

I began drafting this post in front of a fire in my room in a lovely B&B in upstate New York. A quiet weekend in a quaint country town is exactly what I always want, but is especially appreciated after the last few weeks. I knitted on the train up; it was glorious.

I’m finishing it sitting on my couch in Queens on Sunday evening, eating leftover Chinese food, as rain falls outside. I miss the carefree feel of this weekend desperately. Everyone should get to sit in a lovely little room in a tiny town and just exist.

I got some good reading time in, and did a bit of writing—part of this blog, some thoughts for NYC Midnights short story challenge, a bit of work on another project. It’s amazing what a few quiet hours and no obligations allows you to do.

My cat is yelling at me and I don’t have much else to share. I have some pre-work-week stress percolating, but I’m doing my best to ignore it until Monday morning. I’m sorry there isn’t more heft to this post, but I hope you’ll accept a shorter update and celebrate another book added to the completed books list. More next week!

Closing thoughts:

This worry is not helpful. Do what you can right now and deal with the rest when you have to.
